The GUL RS Vareo Winters were held over the weekend of the 14th/15th November at Datchet Water SC. With a forecast of strong gale force winds for the saturday it was a surprise that five Vareos turned up ready. With conditions when setting the boats up of 20knots gusting 30 knots it was sailable but with such a small fleet a decision to wait for an hour was made. After delaying the start the wind had increased even more making it silly to even think about sailing so it was abondonded for the day with four races to be sailed on sunday.

Sunday dawned with another Vareo turning up to make it 6 and with perfect weather we all wondered if this was the same place a few hours earlier. The first race started in about 8 knots of breeze Andrew Wilson was fast out of the blocks showing the rest of us he knew his home waters he stayed in front all three laps until three boat lenghs from the finishing line when a gust of wind caught him out blowing him over allowing Andy Temple to pass for the win with Martin Barrett taking second and Wilson coming across in third.

Race two started in a little more wind with Anthony Paine showing everyone he has the pace upwind getting to the first mark first ahead of Temple who was followed closley by the rest of the field. Lots of place changes with everyone having a go at the back at some point but Temple held onto to take the win from Chris Larr with local hero Wilson not capsizing this time to take third.

Race three and the wind had gone up a little more getting a good start seemed like the best idea as the fleet seemed very close up the first leg. Temple led round the mark followed by Larr. Downwind Temple went left while Larr went right who would get tto the bottom bouy first ? Temple arrived first round with Larr right on his tail ready to pounce on the upwind leg. Larr had the edge pulling ahead and staying in fron to the finish. Wilson was again coming along in third until three boat lengths from the line he capzised allowing Paine to take third.

Paine showed execellent pace for Race 4, leading at the first mark only to be overtaken on the downwind leg. The places remained very close with Wilson catching Larr all the time until the last lap when Wilson took his eye off Temple who seemed to have his own wind coming down the lake. Wislon gybed only to find Temple had overtaken him Larr gybed across then gybed back infront of Temple a lead he held to the line with Temples bow sprit right on his transom. Wilson found himself taking third without capsizing this time.
Many thanks must be given to Datchet on a well run event will all of us being well looked after it.
